Beliefs and Philosophy

The counseling program at Glen Edwards Middle School (GEMS) believes that student achievement is possible when individual learning styles and abilities are respected. As such, every student experiences success when actively supported by those involved in the student's educational plan.

Furthermore, it is the philosophy of the counseling program that all students have the right to access counseling programs and services offered at GEMS. Moreover, students' progress is to be monitored individually for academic, career, and personal/social development. Simultaneously, the school counselor is to adhere to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) ethical standards of conduct in all professional and personal interactions with administrators, students, staff, parents, outside agencies, and the community, in general. Participation in professional development activities is to be an intricate part of the school counselor's duties in order to maintain a quality school counseling program. 

Mission Statement

The professional school counselor at Glen Edwards Middle School offers a comprehensive school counseling program to all students in the domain areas of academic, career, personal and social development. Students have the opportunity to be seen individually and/or in groups, whether or not they are currently in crisis. They are further supported by the school counselor via Student Study Teams, 504 Accommodation Plans, referrals and resources to community agencies, and prevention programs. The school counselor in partnership with the administration, staff, and families collaboratively supports and proactively encourages safe and productive learning environments for student success at school and at home. 

ASCA National Standards

Academic Development
  • Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to effective learning in school and across the lifespan.
  • Students will complete school with the academic preparation essential to choose from a wide range of substantial post-secondary options, including college.
  • Students will understand the relationship of academics to the world of work and to life at home and in the community.
Career Development
  • Students will acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in    relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career decisions.
  • Students will employ strategies to achieve future career success and satisfaction.
  • Students will understand the relationship between personal qualities, education, and training and the world of work.
Personal/Social Development
  • Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and other.
  • Students will make decisions, set goals, and take necessary action to achieve goals.
  • Students will understand safety and survival skills.
